Aras Innovator

Aras Innovator is an enterprise product lifecycle management (PLM) suite built on Microsoft .NET and SQL Server. A platform for building open and adaptable PLM and digital thread solutions.

Aras Innovator is an enterprise-grade product lifecycle management (PLM) platform developed by Aras Corporation. Founded in 2000, Aras pioneered the "enterprise open-source" model for PLM software — offering the core platform at no cost while generating revenue through subscription-based technical support, software updates, and professional services.

Core capabilities

Aras Innovator covers engineering change management and workflow automation, bill of materials (BOM) management across multiple views, configuration management with effectivity and variant support, document and CAD file management with version control, quality management including APQP and PPAP processes, and new product introduction (NPI) workflows.

Digital twin core

Introduced in July 2020, the Digital Twin Core framework enables generation and management of digital twin representations, real-time synchronization between physical and digital assets, integration with IoT data streams for live product monitoring, and traceability from design through manufacturing to field service.

Platform architecture

Built on Microsoft .NET Framework with Microsoft SQL Server backend database. Provides a web-based user interface with customizable forms, SOAP and REST APIs for integration, low-code/no-code customization capabilities, and multi-site deployment support.

Deployment options

Aras Innovator supports on-premise (traditional server installation), Aras Cloud (managed service), and hybrid combinations of on-premise and cloud components.

Licensing model

Core platform is free to download and use. Subscription required for technical support, updates, and advanced features. No per-user licensing fees for the base platform.

Limitations

  • Microsoft stack dependency — requires Windows Server, .NET Framework, and SQL Server, with significant infrastructure costs despite free software licensing
  • Complex implementation — PLM implementations typically require significant customization and professional services engagement
  • Steep learning curve for administrators and developers unfamiliar with the platform's architecture
  • Some advanced features and certified industry solutions require paid subscriptions
  • Web interface based on older .NET technologies may feel dated compared to modern SaaS PLM solutions
  • Integration with modern cloud-native systems may require custom development
