Onshape is a cloud-native CAD and product data management platform that combines 3D modeling, version control, and real-time collaboration in a single system. Unlike traditional file-based CAD, Onshape stores all design data in the cloud, enabling teams to work concurrently on the same model without file locks or version conflicts.

The platform includes professional-grade parametric modeling for parts, assemblies, and drawings, along with specialized tools for sheet metal, surfacing, and frame design. Built-in PDM provides automatic version history, branching and merging, and release management workflows without separate software or servers.

Onshape operates entirely through web browsers and mobile apps, requiring no local installations or high-performance workstations. Updates deploy automatically every three weeks. The platform supports extensive file format compatibility including STEP, IGES, Parasolid, SolidWorks, CATIA, and Siemens NX for import and export.

Key capabilities

Cloud-native CAD:

  • Parametric part and assembly modeling
  • Sheet metal, surfacing, and frame design
  • 2D drawings with automatic BOM generation
  • Mixed modeling with mesh geometry (STL, OBJ)

Built-in PDM:

  • Automatic version history with infinite undo
  • Branching and merging for design exploration
  • Release management workflows
  • Company-managed data libraries

Collaboration:

  • Multi-user simultaneous editing
  • Real-time comments and markup
  • Sharing via URL with granular permissions
  • Slack integration for notifications

Extended capabilities:

  • FeatureScript for custom parametric features
  • Open REST API for automation and integrations
  • Onshape App Store for partner extensions
  • Simulation, CAM, and rendering tools (Professional+)
  • PCB Studio for ECAD/MCAD collaboration
  • Model-Based Definition (MBD) support

Limitations

  • Requires continuous internet connection for full functionality; offline mode has limited capabilities
  • Subscription pricing starts at $1,500/user/year for commercial use, which may exceed budgets for individual hobbyists
  • FeatureScript customization requires programming knowledge, creating a barrier for non-technical users
  • Performance depends on internet bandwidth and latency; large assemblies may experience slower response times compared to desktop CAD
  • File export options, while comprehensive, may not preserve all feature history when converting to other CAD formats
  • Enterprise SSO and advanced security features only available in highest pricing tier
