Samsara is a cloud software platform for connected operations that combines fleet telematics, safety cameras, equipment tracking, maintenance, routing, and field workflow tools in one system. It is used by fleets and other physical operations teams that need a shared system of record for vehicles, drivers, trailers, sites, and related operational events.

What it does

Samsara brings together GPS-based fleet visibility, ELD compliance, AI-assisted video safety, equipment and trailer tracking, reefer monitoring, maintenance workflows, and reporting. Its developer platform exposes a REST API, signed webhooks, and Kafka-based streaming so organizations can route telematics and operational events into internal systems, analytics stacks, and partner applications.

Deployment and integration model

The product is delivered primarily as SaaS, with mobile apps for drivers and field workflows plus vehicle, camera, and asset hardware in the field. Samsara positions the platform as an open ecosystem with hundreds of third-party integrations and a partner program, which makes it a fit for operators that need to connect routing, TMS, compliance, maintenance, insurance, and OEM data.

Where it fits

Samsara fits best in fleet and field operations where vehicle visibility, driver safety, route execution, equipment monitoring, and compliance all need to be managed together. In manufacturing-adjacent contexts, it is most relevant for inbound and outbound logistics fleets, service fleets, utility field operations, refrigerated transport, and distributed asset tracking.

Limitations

  • Samsara is a commercial SaaS platform, and the available pricing sources in this research pass did not expose public list pricing, which makes quick budget qualification harder than with tools that publish clear package prices.
  • Many of Samsara's core outcomes depend on deploying vendor hardware such as vehicle gateways, cameras, or asset trackers, so it is not a lightweight software-only fit for teams that want to start with existing telematics devices.
  • The Kafka connector documentation notes that platform events cannot currently be backfilled, which can matter for downstream data pipelines that expect full event recovery after outages.
  • The platform spans safety, telematics, equipment, and workforce workflows, so smaller fleets that only need a narrow point solution may find the product broader than required.
