OpenProject is a comprehensive open-source project management platform developed by the OpenProject Foundation. Built primarily in Ruby on Rails with Angular frontend components, it serves organizations seeking full data sovereignty while managing projects through classic waterfall, agile Scrum/Kanban, or hybrid methodologies.

The platform centers around work packages as the core unit of work, supporting hierarchical relationships, custom workflows, and extensive filtering. Gantt charts provide timeline visualization with automatic and manual scheduling modes, while agile boards accommodate sprint planning, Kanban workflows, and team capacity planning through the Team Planner feature.

Key capabilities

Project portfolio management includes multi-project views, custom dashboards, and project templates for standardized initiation. Time tracking and cost reporting allow labor and unit cost budgeting with customizable reports. Team collaboration features encompass real-time document editing, meeting management, wiki documentation, and forums.

Integration capabilities include a REST API v3, BCF API v2.1 for BIM workflows, GitHub and GitLab repository linking, and Nextcloud/SharePoint file management. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) server enables AI assistant connectivity. SCIM provisioning supports automated user synchronization with identity providers.

Deployment options

The Community edition provides full functionality at no cost for self-hosted deployments. Enterprise editions add professional support, security features like antivirus scanning and SSO, and advanced functionality such as baseline comparison and custom actions. Cloud hosting is available with data residency in EU or German data centers.

Limitations

  • Requires PostgreSQL 16+ with specific extensions (pg_trgm, btree_gist, unaccent), complicating database migrations from earlier versions
  • Packaged installation support limited to specific Linux distributions (Ubuntu 22.04/20.04, Debian 12/11, RHEL 9.x, SLES 15) with no native Windows support
  • Minimum hardware requirements of 4 CPU cores and 4GB RAM for production use, scaling significantly with concurrent users
  • Enterprise add-ons including team planner, advanced agile boards, and SSO require paid subscriptions starting at $7.25 per user monthly
  • Mobile experience relies on responsive web design or beta mobile apps rather than fully native applications
