Chatwoot is an open-source customer support platform designed to help businesses manage conversations across multiple channels from a single dashboard. Built with Ruby on Rails and Vue.js, it provides a modern alternative to proprietary solutions like Intercom and Zendesk.

The platform supports omnichannel communication including website live chat, email, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter/X, WhatsApp, and SMS. The built-in AI assistant called Captain helps agents respond faster by suggesting answers, accessing past conversations, and translating messages in real-time.

Chatwoot offers flexible deployment options including managed cloud SaaS or self-hosted installations on Linux VMs, Docker, or Kubernetes. The self-hosted version requires PostgreSQL and Redis, with minimum hardware requirements of 2 CPU cores and 4GB RAM.

Core features

Chatwoot provides a unified inbox that consolidates messages from all connected channels. The platform includes canned responses for common queries, custom attributes for contact management, and automation rules to streamline workflows. Agent bots can handle initial customer interactions before routing to human agents.

The help center feature allows businesses to create knowledge bases for customer self-service. Dashboard apps enable embedding external tools directly in the agent interface. Team management features support multiple agents with role-based permissions.

  • Self-hosted deployment requires technical expertise to configure PostgreSQL, Redis, and SSL certificates
  • AI features (Captain) are limited by credit allowances on paid plans, with no AI on the free tier
  • Mobile SDKs are available but require additional integration work for iOS and Android apps
  • Email threading and conversation history can become unwieldy with high-volume support queues
  • Custom branding options are restricted on lower-tier plans
  • No native voice or video calling capabilities built into the platform
