Snipe-IT is open-source IT asset management software for teams that need a shared system of record for hardware, software licenses, accessories, components, and consumables. It combines inventory tracking, user assignment, auditing, and API-based automation in a web application that can be self-hosted or run as a managed service.

What it does

Snipe-IT centers on asset lifecycle tracking rather than endpoint discovery. Teams can assign laptops, mobile devices, peripherals, and other assets to users, locations, or status buckets; manage software licenses and renewals; record maintenance history; and generate barcode or QR-based labels for audits and check-in/check-out workflows. The product pages also document SAML, LDAP, and SCIM support for identity workflows, plus community and partner integrations around Jira, JAMF, Kandji, UniFi, Intune, Axonius, and other IT operations tools.

Deployment and integration model

Snipe-IT is available as self-hosted software and as a hosted offering from the vendor. The application exposes a JSON REST API intended to cover most of the actions available in the web interface, which makes it suitable for synchronization scripts, internal tooling, and low-code automation services. Vendor materials also point to import/export tooling, scheduled backups, and mobile-friendly barcode scanning workflows for distributed teams.

Why it matters in operations

For manufacturers and other asset-heavy organizations, Snipe-IT can help track internal IT and operational support equipment that falls outside core ERP or MES workflows, such as laptops, tablets, scanners, network gear, loaner devices, and software entitlements. That makes it adjacent to procurement and internal asset governance rather than a full procurement suite or a supply-chain execution platform.

Limitations

  • Snipe-IT is positioned as an IT asset management system, not a full procurement or vendor management platform, so vendor sourcing, purchase approvals, contract workflows, and supplier scorecards are outside its documented core scope.
  • The platform tracks assigned assets and related records, but the vendor materials emphasize manual inventory control and API integrations rather than automatic network discovery, so organizations wanting agentless discovery or deep endpoint telemetry will likely need companion tools.
  • Hosted plans apply API rate limits on lower tiers, which can matter for high-volume synchronization or automation use cases.
  • Some native mobile experiences and ecosystem connectors are maintained by third parties, so feature depth and long-term support can vary outside the core web application.
