frePPLe

FrePPLe is an open-source supply chain planning platform that helps manufacturing companies move beyond spreadsheet-based planning. It provides AI-driven demand forecasting, inventory optimization, and finite-capacity production scheduling.

frePPLe is an open-source supply chain planning platform designed for manufacturing companies. It replaces spreadsheet-based planning processes with intelligent, automated forecasting and scheduling, implementing best practices from lean manufacturing, theory of constraints, and pull-based planning.

Key capabilities

frePPLe specializes in three core planning functions: demand forecasting using time-series algorithms and AI; inventory planning to optimize stock levels across distribution networks; and production scheduling that respects material and capacity constraints. The platform generates finite-capacity production plans that account for bottlenecks, lead times, and resource availability.

Deployment and integration

Available as Community Edition (open source, MIT licensed), Cloud Edition (fully managed SaaS), and Enterprise Edition (on-premise). Ships as Ubuntu .deb packages, Docker containers, and source tarballs. Integrates with Odoo ERP and provides REST APIs, CSV/Excel file interfaces, and direct database access for custom workflows.

Who uses it

Manufacturers across discrete and process industries — from small operations to enterprises. The platform helps companies reduce planning time by up to 70%, increase inventory turns by 28%, and reduce stock-outs by 60%. Customer base includes Siemens Healthineers, ABB, food and beverage companies, and logistics operators.

Technical architecture

Built on Python/Django backend, PostgreSQL database, C++ planning engine, Vue.js frontend. Active development with 29 contributors and 11,000+ commits.

Limitations

  • Community Edition lacks some forecasting and scheduling features available in commercial editions
  • Primarily designed for production planning — not a full ERP or MES replacement
  • Integration beyond Odoo requires custom REST API or database-level work
  • Documentation is functional but less polished than commercial APS tools
  • Smaller community than mainstream ERP platforms — fewer third-party plugins and integrations
