Problem class

Mechanism

Human-in-the-loop (HITL) designs require human approval before each AI-informed decision. Human-on-the-loop (HOTL) designs allow AI to act autonomously within defined parameters, with human monitoring and override capability. Human-in-command (HIC) ensures humans can override or shut down AI at any point. The appropriate level of oversight is determined by consequence severity, reversibility, and affected population.
