Digital Product Passport Data Exchange

Ecosystem & Inter-Enterprise Exchange

Cross-enterprise exchange of product sustainability and composition data required for EU Digital Product Passports via dataspace infrastructure.

Problem class

DPP data spans the entire value chain — raw material origin from suppliers, manufacturing emissions from producers, use-phase performance, end-of-life recyclability. No single organization holds all the data; exchange infrastructure is essential.

Mechanism

Each value-chain participant contributes their segment of DPP data — material composition, PCF contribution, process parameters, recyclability assessments — through dataspace connectors. Standardized data models (Asset Administration Shell, DPP-specific schemas) ensure interoperability between contributors. Aggregation services compile multi-party contributions into complete DPP records accessible via product QR codes. Access control ensures that sensitive commercial data is shared only with authorized roles (regulators, recyclers, consumers).

Required inputs

  • Product-level data contributions from each value-chain participant
  • Standardized DPP data models per product category
  • Dataspace connector deployment for cross-enterprise data exchange
  • Access control policies defining data visibility per stakeholder role

Produced outputs

  • Complete DPP records aggregated from multi-party value-chain data
  • Regulatory-compliant product transparency for EU ESPR requirements
  • Consumer-accessible sustainability information via product QR codes
  • Recycler-accessible composition and end-of-life data for material recovery

Industries where this is standard

  • Battery manufacturers under EU Battery Regulation DPP mandate from February 2027
  • Automotive value chains in Catena-X exchanging component-level DPP data
  • Construction materials companies under new EU CPR requirements (Digital TER-X)
  • Textile value chains preparing for ESPR DPP delegated acts from 2027
  • Electronics manufacturers preparing for WEEE-related DPP extensions

Counterexamples

  • Attempting to build DPP data internally without cross-enterprise exchange produces incomplete records missing supplier-contributed data that constitutes 70–90% of product lifecycle impact.
  • Creating proprietary DPP data exchange formats incompatible with emerging CEN/CENELEC and ESPR standards risks rebuilding the entire data architecture when standards finalize.

Representative implementations

  • EU ESPR (Regulation 2024/1781) mandates DPPs for textiles, furniture, iron/steel from 2027, with construction products following under CPR from ~2030.
  • Catena-X demonstrated PCF data exchange across OEM-Tier1-Tier2 (Ford-Flex-Micron) for battery passport compliance in 2024, validating cross-tier DPP feasibility.
  • Digital TER-X Gaia-X lighthouse project builds the European Construction data space framework, creating DPP infrastructure specifically for building products and materials.

Common tooling categories

DPP data aggregation platforms, value-chain data exchange connectors, product identity registries, and multi-party access control engines.
