Problem class

Scope 3 emissions calculation requires supplier-specific PCF data that industry-average databases cannot provide. Without standardized exchange, companies use inaccurate proxies or conduct bilateral data collection that cannot scale.

Mechanism

The Catena-X PCF exchange standard (and emerging cross-industry equivalents) defines a common data model for product carbon footprints, enabling suppliers to publish primary PCF data once and share it with multiple customers through dataspace infrastructure. WBCSD's PACT (Partnership for Carbon Transparency) provides the cross-industry framework for PCF data exchange. Standardized calculation rules (ISO 14067, PEF) ensure comparability. Verification mechanisms validate that reported PCFs meet methodological requirements.

Required inputs

  • Supplier-specific PCF calculations following standardized methodology
  • PACT/Catena-X PCF data model implementation
  • Dataspace connector configured for PCF data exchange
  • Verification and validation rules for incoming PCF data quality

Produced outputs

  • Primary PCF data from suppliers replacing industry-average estimates
  • Dramatically improved Scope 3 accuracy for reporting and reduction tracking
  • Standardized PCF exchange reducing bilateral data collection effort
  • CBAM-ready embedded emissions data from non-EU suppliers

Industries where this is standard

  • Automotive OEMs and suppliers exchanging PCFs via Catena-X
  • Battery value chains under EU Battery Regulation carbon footprint mandates
  • Chemical companies providing PCFs to downstream manufacturers
  • Steel and aluminium producers under CBAM reporting requirements
  • Consumer goods companies engaging suppliers for primary Scope 3 data

Counterexamples

  • Requesting PCF data from suppliers without providing standardized calculation guidance produces incomparable results that are worse than well-chosen industry averages.
  • Exchanging PCF data bilaterally with each customer multiplies supplier effort; dataspace-based publish-once-share-many models reduce supplier burden by orders of magnitude.

Representative implementations

  • WBCSD PACT initiative engages 300+ companies defining cross-industry PCF data exchange standards, supported by technology solutions from SAP, Siemens, and others.
  • Catena-X PCF exchange demonstrated intercontinental data flow (Ford US ↔ Flex ↔ Micron) in 2024, enabling verified primary carbon data across three-tier automotive supply chains.
  • Catena-X and Japan's Ouranos Ecosystem achieved cross-dataspace PCF interoperability for battery data in March 2025, proving global scalability of the approach.

Common tooling categories

PCF data exchange platforms, PACT-compliant APIs, dataspace PCF connectors, and verification and validation engines.
